Well things are out of control in the Middle East. This time it is Libya, which has proven, at least thus far, to be the bloodiest of the "revolutions" that have and will sweep the region. It is now high time that good Colonel be displaced, probably by any means necessary. It would be a very tricky thing to get involved militarily in that region though and perhaps it should not be done so at this time for the sole purpose of ousting Gaddafi (Khaddify, Quadaffi, Whatever). The time may well come that military intervention is necessary in the Middle East for a purpose much more important than promoting democracy, (which is the pipe dream of fools anyway). That more important reason for intervention would be to secure our energy supply. For this Hellish scenario one must thank those among us who have been standing in the way of becoming energy self sufficient. It is long past time to secure our own energy supply by beginning an aggressive exploration and drilling program frankly regardless of any short term adverse environmental impact. Even beginning tomorrow I fear is to late to do any real good. What about alternative energy? Research, explore or do whatever, but do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. That baby is oil.
I must say that those who have hampered and perhaps hamstrung our nation by their obstinacy on becoming energy independent are traitors of the worst kind. There is really no room here for discussion. If one willfully damages our nation, which the anti energy crowd has willfully done, then they have committed treason and perhaps may be the architects of calamity. This is an issue that is non debatable. It is not mere politics to damage one's nation. It is treason. The radical environmentalist crowd may well cost American lives.

Send in the marines so BP and Mobil/Exxon can make _more_ profit is good for USA.
Oh great, calling for a third war for oil. Considering how well the first two are going, why not send in 'other people's sons' to die for a lie. Why don't you join up and show the world how to do it (die for a lie)?
No thank you.

Adolph would've agreed.

Ema when you are paying 6.00 bucks or more a gallon for fuel (hopefully not) then come to me with your bleeding heart. Is it so bad if this country becomes energy independent? If we were so then the whole Middle East could go to hell in a handbasket and we would not much care. Hopefully we do not ever find it necessary to become further involved militarily in that region of the world but I beleive that we will indeed do so and of course the reason will be to secure energy (I will grant you that). If our country does become further embroiled there then I put a good deal of blame on energy obstructionists here in the United States.
ALso if you read carefully, I am not saying send in the Marines. The last thing I want to see. Just saying that this country will do so before we allow our economy to spiral totally. BTW I have served honorably in two branches of the service so this whole "why don't you go" holds no water with me. I welcome your comments and opinions but I usually just can't take them very seriously. Perhaps I am just pessimistic, but I see the situation in the Middle East as dangerous and potentially very damaging to this country. That is what matters most after all.

Adverse environmental impacts are seldom short term. I'm not saying that that means we shouldn't do more exploration and drilling here in the US, but we cannot disregard the environmental impact involved in deciding where and how to do so, whether they be short or long term.
I'm not sure we actually can completely free ourselves from purchasing foreign oil at all, or whether it would be advantageous for us to do so, economically... ...and even if we can, it won't be anytime soon.
We do need oil, and we should be producing more of our own, but we cannot disregard the environmental impact--which ultimately, becomes a human impact--of doing so. I believe that we need to weigh the benefits and costs of every site, and make decisions that we can ultimately live with.
Obviously, I don't support wars for oil or to limit the price of oil here in the US... but if American citizens working oil fields in foreign lands are threatened, we do need to defend them from attack.
