RIP George Blanda

George Blanda passed away just the other day. Another football legend is no longer with us. As a kid I can remember Blanda both kicking and playing QB with the Oakland Raiders. He was a contemporary of the late Jack Tatum on the team that was dubbed NFL's criminal element. RIP George Blanda. You will be missed.

The Fun of Surfing (the web)

A while back I wrote briefly about enjoying watching people "cover" songs on You Tube and elsewhere. This is what I meant. No this is not me. I wish I could sing like this. There are a lot of talented people out there.

New HBO Show Looks Like It May Be A Winner

A lot college football is not going my way today, well Notre Dame did get smoked and that does a heart good, but some of the rest is well, bad. That co..s...er, er sorry, I mean that rutabaga Saban squeaked by with a victory over a pretty good Hogs team. Shame. So instead of dwell on football for the rest of the evening I believe I will briefly discuss the new HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
This show made a debut last Sunday but I did not watch it right away, choosing to record it and view at my leisure instead. Last night I decided to check it out and came away with the impression that this will be another hit from HBO. Probably will not quite reach the level of The Sopranos or True Blood, but a good show that will hold its own. Steve Buscemi does a pretty good job and of course Scorsese and Marky Mark are involved. This adds up to some pretty darn good television. The acting may be just a bit melodramatic for my taste and that might be the only complaint I have concerning the opening episode of this series. The wardrobe is way cool and it appears it will be violent enough for the hardcore gangster film fan. I am looking forward to following this series starting tomorrow night.

Wolf Interviews Donald Trump

I was watching CNN a few minutes ago and Wolf Blitzer had Hair on for a fairly in depth interview. Now I have never really cared much for Hair, find him to be an arrogant media hound, but I must admit he is one smart dude. I did not catch the entire interview, but did see and listen to enough to agree that Trump has his finger on the pulse of our great nation. Number one, Hair mentioned that when we leave Iraq, the Iranians will become the dominant power and will have a good deal of influence in region. He further mentioned that we have upset the balance of power in the region and of course that is something that I totally agree with. How nobody could see this is beyond me. He also made reference to taking the oil in the area if I am not mistaken. Why not? What would anyone be able to do at this point? Not much. I have always thought this a good idea. Sorry if that bothers you. Hair also is of the opinion that we need to bring our manufacturing back home. Of course that makes sense. Outsourcing to foreign nations, especially potential enemies (China, Mexico, Pakistan) is foolhardy and treasonous. I wish I had seen more of the interview.

Freedom Keeps Slipping Away

Do you truly think that you are free? We do enjoy more freedom than most in people in the world but our liberty is slipping away more and more. It is noticeable. It is insidious. It is annoying and most importantly, it is dangerous. Take for example the anti smoking crusade in NYC. In addition to bans in restaurants, bars, etc. now they want to ban all outdoor smoking as well. Crazy. Do they not have anything better to do. I can recall when you could walk into a store and buy smokes no matter what your age. Occasionally you would run across a person behind the counter that would not sell them to minors but that was rare. In Texas there are actually "cops" whose sole job is to entrap clerks into selling an underage person tobacco products or beer. I would be embarrassed to say that was how I earned a living. What about underage drinking? I can remember a time when if you could look over the bar, then you could get a drink. Not saying that was a wise thing to do but what the hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Of course I lived in south Louisiana at the time.(That area is more like a friendly foreign country than a part of the U.S.). Now a defender of our freedom can not get a beer legally in any state in the Union. It is ok to die for your country but not to have a beer after a hard day in the field. Something wrong there. Have you recently tried to buy a gun or ammunition? You feel like you are joining the Army after filling out all the nonsensical paperwork. I don't believe it is any business of any government agency if I decide to buy at .410 shotgun. None whatsoever. How about the nonsense that one has to go through to get on an airplane? Well I guess that has become necessary. We can thank  Mohammedans for that. The longer we have people in government that "want to get things done" and leave their mark as it were, the more our freedoms are restricted. Sometimes it really is better for our elected officials to just do nothing.

Economists Practice Witch Science

Did you happen to know that the recession ended in June 09? I was not aware of this. BwaaaHaaahhhaaa. Do they think for a second that anyone is buying this nonsense? Just because the stock market has rebounded means nothing. People are still having trouble finding jobs. Wages are stagnant. The housing market has not rebounded. Car sales will be flat again if they are not already. Etc. Are you not tired of those that may be educated beyond their usefulness telling the rest of us how things are? Think about it. Meteorologists really don't have a clue about what goes on. Global warming may (or may not be) a hoax. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico did not portend the end of life as we know it. Have you ever been to a physician and knew damn good and well they had not a clue? Have you seen friends and family die of cancer because it was not detected early enough even though there had been numerous trips to the physician with symptoms? Very often those that pretend to have the knowledge to tell you what is going on in the world, with your body, etc. etc. have no more of a clue than the local grocery clerk. In some cases less. Economists? I piss on them.

Shamless Self Promotion

I have not been doing a lot of work on this blog of late. It is college football season and I enjoy watching and writing about the game. If anyone has a similar interest join me at collegefootballfromthecab.blogspot.com for my completely amateurish, quite often wrong, and usually biased analysis of the college game. I will continue to work on this blog of course but probably most of my "work" will be about college football for a while.

Damn! I Forgot Burn a Confederate Flag Day

A while back one of my readers let me know about an event apparently called "Burn a Confederate Flag Day." This was supposedly to take place on Sept 12. Haven't heard too much about it - it has not been on the news that I know of. I wasn't going to participate in anything as silly as that anyway. I am, after all, a Southeastern Conference man. Ain't gonna burn no Johnny flag anytime nohow.

Today is the anniversary of the attack by the Mohammedans. I will not forget nor will I forgive. Ever.

Jury Duty

Today I had Jury Duty. Oh Boy! I was not looking forward to it but of course it is an important part of living in a civil society. The Chief Deputy who welcomed us mentioned that he was aware that it is not fun for most people and disrupts routines, etc. but that there are troops in the field defending our way of life and that of course includes the right to a "jury of peers." There is no such thing in very very many countries. I had not really thought of it that way but he was right on the money! As it so happened they had called way too many potential jurors. Enough to fill up two courtrooms. As luck would have it, everybody in the courtroom that I was in was excused. We were done by 0830. The troops defending our freedom are not excused at 0830 and for that we owe them our gratitude.

Palin Again

Today I was flipping stations and came across Hannity just as he was introducing Sarah Palin. He started off by calling her Governor Palin. Does he not mean Resigned Governor Palin? Did she not resign from office.? I do believe that if Palin were a man Sean would practice fellatio.  Don't get me wrong, I agree with most of the things that she puts forth. National defense, energy independence, the reassurance of our allies, and general right of center policy are things I think any American that has a lick of sense can sign on to. As far as Palin is concerned though there is something wrong there I think. Something missing. Something false.  I don't like her. I just don't like her. Sue me. One thing she did say that I found interesting was her calling some journalists "impotent," and "limp." She was referring to journalists that do not do their homework and rely on anonymous sources, usually with the intent to defame. I must admit that she is right on the mark there. I wonder what they are teaching in Journalism "School" now. Obviously not ethics. There is really no need for college courses in Journalism anymore anyway. Most of us learned to write, at least to some extent, before we finished grammar school. Television "talking heads" for the most part are not real journalists anymore. Seems like a waste of time and money to study journalism in college. You would probably be better off learning to frame houses. Oh well, I did think it was funny that she called these so called journalists "impotent" and "limp." I like that vato! I like that. Doesn't change my thoughts on her in general though.
